Love Your Earth competition results
Sunday, November 11, 2007

The results of the Designboom Love Your Earth competition have been published. Sadly my entry didn't make it onto the shortlist. I suspect my entry was disqualified as I used photo library images to demonstrate that my design could contain images to enhance the concept. Judging from the entries a corporate brand identity approach may not have been the best strategy. Never-the-less, besides some minor drawing refinement issues, I'm pleased with my submission and have included this piece in my portfolio. Go to Other via Portfolio to see my concept. Otherwise click on the image above to see the results of the competition.

SCG London, block-booking
Sunday, September 2, 2007

SCG London has block-booked me until the beginning of December. I have been working on the positioning of a mass and upper mass Russian bank as well as an associated sub-prime loans brand. The latter has been particularly interesting as local context is important. Local business people are trained to deliver customer-specific loans.

Otherwise, I've also been involved in developing a supporting brand identity for the second largest home appliances and audio visual brand in Russia. As well as an identity for a large Russian ATM network.

Working through Russian has been particularly challenging as I've not had my usual language tools available to me. Language-based ideas often get lost in translation.

I'm pleased to announce that I am trading as a limited company in the UK. I have secured Andrew Sabatier Limited in order to comply with my clients reluctance to employ sole traders. The UK government has put agencies under pressure to have contractors go through a payroll system or deal with them as companies. Hydro Polymers re-brands as Kerling
Sunday, July 15, 2007

In February and March of this year I developed brand identity concepts for the re-branding of Hydro Polymers by Karakter. Hydro Polymers listed on the Oslo stock exchange as Kerling ASA and began the initial roll-out of their new identity (shown above). In May Ineos put in a successful bid to buy the company and the listing was withdrawn.

Although the chosen identity is sound, I put more energy into developing the two other Kerling brand identities featured in the concepts section of this website. Please select Portfolio from the menu on the left and then Concepts to view these.

Siegel & Gale, contract details
Monday, July 2, 2007

Periscope got the details of my contract with Siegel & Gale a bit muddled. The budget only allowed for my involvement up to Friday of last week.

We spent the two weeks developing event brand concepts for the largest Oil producing company in the world. As part of a team of six designers, including a hands-on Creative Director and Design Director, we generated seven concepts covering three brand stories. Two of the seven concepts represent my contribution to the project. The work is being presented later this week.

There are some up-coming projects at Siegel & Gale which may afford more of my time in the near future.

New portfolio website
Saturday, June 16, 2007

As much as I liked the look of my previous website, beyond the flash intro, it was quite demanding. Providing you have a decent broadband connection, accessing my work should now be quick and easy.

A simple visual navigation menu (click image above) enables you to get an overview and should help you decide which piece to look at, particularly if you are not familiar with the brands featured. Otherwise a text menu is always available on the left. As before, there are PDFs of each entry to download as case studies, as well as whole presentations of each major section.

I hope this new website will encourage you to spend more time appreciating the ideas and presentation of work I have given so much of myself to. Also, try to imagine what might have been with some of my concept work. Many of these projects were derailed for reasons beyond what could have been anticipated at the time of the brief.

And, for your further appreciation, take a look through the 'Other' projects section. There are bound to be a few surprises and plenty of food for thought - if you like to think about branding more profoundly.

Landor, presentation enhancements
Friday, June 15, 2007

The major South African supermarket re-brand I've been developing was presented to senior management in Johannesburg on Monday. The initial body of work took us to the end of last month. After meetings with suppliers and key people in South Africa, the Landor presentation team decided on a few last minute enhancements. As a result I was called in to work remotely with the design director for the better part of last week. The project has been well received and I will be in again on Monday to take the brandmark further.

Landor until the 29th of May
Wednesday, May 9, 2007

Landor have booked me until the 29th of May, from today. I'm involved in the development of the chosen route from our initial presentation to a major South African supermarket. Last week turned out to be a brandstyle development for Hydro Aluminium. It has been interesting to be involved in the developments of the Hydro brand. Earlier in the year I developed brand identity concepts for Hydro Polymers at Karakter (now Siegel & Gale UK).

Landor, cover
Wednesday, April 25, 2007

Landor have confirmed another booking for next week. They need cover for various projects. One of which may be as a result of the South African supermarket project being presented in Johannesburg today. Otherwise there are a couple of airline brands and an international family entertainment company which need attention.

Landor, new project
Tuesday, April 3, 2007

I've been invited to work on a new project at Landor. Strangely, I'll be working on new brand identity concepts for a major South African supermarket. It does make sense for someone like me to be working on it. I know the brand well and I'm astonished that they are able to afford Landor. This is a three week contract starting tomorrow.

Smoking kills
Monday, February 12, 2007

Too eager for work I didn't persist with enough questions when Network approach me to work at G2. I understood the project might've involved G2's largest client British American Tobacco.

Brand diversification of the sort Marlboro, Camel and Dunhill have successfully realised could be very interesting, I half-thought at the time. Health warnings, photographs of cancerous lungs and pregnant women smoking, leaving half a pack for 'something creative'. Uh, uh - no way! I don't care how much money gets thrown at me.

Lesson learnt. This leaves me available for another project.

Death of Dr Klaus Schmidt
Tuesday, February 6, 2007

I was shocked to learn of Dr Klaus Schmidt's sudden and unexpected death on Wednesday last week. Dr Schmidt sponsored and supported a concept I originated for the new Mercedes-Benz positioning. It was a daring concept, one which had the potential to re-establish leadership status to the troubled Mercedes-Benz brand. I expected it to be a career defining piece of work and will always remember Dr Schmidt as recognising the opportunity for it to be a pioneering result from Henrion Ludlow Schmidt.

My condolences go to Dr Schmidt's family, friends and work colleagues.
